Midwest City’s James Washburn, “We can do something special this year.” – Presented by RibCrib

The year was 1988. The Midwest City Bombers coming off a state football championship fielded a great baseball team that spring. That team would go on to win Midwest City’s only state title in the sport.

Today the team is scrapy with several players who have the ability to play somewhere at the next level. James Washburn is one of those players. Washburn has played the sport for 10 years and now that he’s a sophomore in high school, he has turned his focus to making the dream of playing in college and beyond come true.

“I would like to play collegiate and professional baseball. My first pick for a job that’s not baseball related is business or accounting,” said Washburn.

The starting shortstop said the team is shaping up nicely and he feels they could surprise some people.

“Our team is looking good. We are a full year better. We have a great chance to really make some noise and do something special this year,” said Washburn.

Being a student-athlete at Midwest City comes with some expectations. Especially in athletics. But Washburn said the opportunity to represent MWC while continuing his education is what makes it special.

“I love the fact that I am blessed enough to be able to further my education and play the sport I love at the same time. MWC has always been my home, and I will be here until the Lord finishes what he has planned for me here,” said Washburn.

The starting shortstop said it’s his teammates that make all of the workouts and struggles worth it.

“I love their loyalty. There is a unity within the team of MWC that I have not had anywhere else,” said Washburn.

Also a member of National Honor Society, Interact Club, and FCA, Washburn has very little time for anything else.

“I enjoy getting extra skill work in, spending time with family, and occasionally playing video games. My favorite school subject is math, and I don’t really have a favorite teacher. They all tie really,” said Washburn.

The sophomore plans to continue improving and doing whatever he can to help his team win.

“I am a middle infielder and pitcher. I have worked to improve my hitting the most, and because of it, I have made considerable jumps in that area.”
