Midwest City Standout Bailee Guthery on Faith and Hoops – Presented by Eskridge Honda

By Elizabeth Contreras

Bailee Guthery, a standout basketball player at Midwest City High School, has earned a powerful reputation on the court. Her teammates know that when she steps on the floor they can rely on her. So much so that a simple phrase has come to define her presence: “In Bailee we trust.”

Guthery has been immersed in basketball throughout her entire life. Growing up in a family full of players, she watched her parents and relatives on the court with admiration.

“I honestly wanted to experience basketball for myself,” she said. It is now an interest that has carried her through years of milestones and hard work.

As a self-described supportive and uplifting leader, Guthery does her fair share to encourage teammates and keep morale high.

“The skill I’ve worked hardest to improve is building a strong mindset,” she explained.

“I prayed and asked God to help me be strong mentally.”

Her faith, she shared, has been a guiding force through challenges in all areas of her life. In basketball, prayer is part of preparation, and she knows that success doesn’t come overnight.

“It takes YEARS of hard work,” Guthery said. And when setbacks happen, she leans on Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

That mental strength has spilled over into her leadership on the court.

“It’s special because everyone is their own person, and we all just mesh,” she said. She understands the weight of responsibility that accompanies being a trusted teammate and pours into others at every opportunity.

“Even if you aren’t having the best game, always choose to pick someone else up. Speak positive words and let them know it’s okay to keep trying,” she added.

For Guthery, this year’s goals include prioritizing physical health to avoid injury, and to play their long-standing rivals in the playoffs.

“I cannot wait until we see Del City in the playoffs,” Guthery said.

“It is PERSONAL.”

After graduation, Guthery hopes to continue playing basketball in college while pursuing a degree in culinary arts. For those who come after her, Guthery says to trust in God, believe in yourself, and never rush the journey.
